use of wikipedia

interesting discussion on digg about the use of wikipedia for school projects...

my opinion echoes that of some of the commenters - and what, iirc, was said by henry jenkins in his book CONVERGENCE CULTURE... wikipedia makes a great first source, but a lousy final source. i find wikipedia a good way to get some very general background info before beginning looking into a topic in depth...

what are your thoughts?

As many students use wikipedia, I think it is a good platform to get students to dive into research from. I find the fact that the information is only as good as the last editor is a teachable moment for critical reading and building arguements based on multiple resources.

The discussion and history tabs are also teaching moments waiting to happen especially for controversial issues and current events.

good points...
as with any tool, it is less an issue of whether it is good or bad, than how can it be used in an appropriate manner...
